CHAPTER EIGHT

Getting the gravel Friday evening before Violet and Sydney came over would be cutting things close, so she called Violet the next morning to let her know she could let herself into the house if Flora wasn’t there when she arrived. She left a spare key under a rock near the shed, and sent Violet a text reminding her not to let Amaretto get outside.

She finished painting the guestroom that day, and after cleaning up, she took a moment to admire the room. It was still empty, and the floorboards still needed work, but it looked miles better than it had when she moved in. She was glad Grady had convinced her to work on the shed, but getting back to making progress on the house felt even better. She would dedicate next week to the floorboards, and then it would be time to decorate the room and she would officially have a guest bedroom.

She cleaned up a little and went grocery shopping so she would have snacks and drinks for their get-together that night, and spent some time with Amaretto, working on getting the cat used to wearing her harness until it was time to meet Grady at the hardware store. She parked in the lot around back and they got into his truck together.

“I feel like I should be trying to discourage you from going back there,” Grady said as he drove toward the gravel lot. “For all we know, this guy has killed two women.”

“I know,” she admitted. “But we aren’t going to give him a reason to be suspicious of us. I just want to get some answers. And I do need the gravel.”

“Don’t go anywhere alone while we’re there,” he said. “Promise?”

“I promise,” she assured him.

He drove them north of town and turned onto the road the gravel lot was on. He had to slow down before he reached the driveway, because trucks and equipment with the name Warbler Arborist Company printed on the sides were parked along the road in front of the gravel lot. Flora remembered the argument Connor had been having with his neighbor the day they found the body, and raised her eyebrows. He must be confident he wasn’t going to face charges for what happened to Audrey if he was moving ahead with clearing the trees already.

Grady maneuvered around the equipment and put on his blinker to turn into the drive, but had to brake when they saw the gates were closed and a woman was standing in front of them. No, not just standing – she had chained herself to the gates, making it impossible for the police officer who was talking to her to move her, and preventing them from opening.

On closer inspection, she wasn’t just any woman. It was Lacie – Connor’s neighbor.

Flora exchanged a look with Grady. This was unexpected. She had a sinking feeling she wouldn’t be getting gravel or answers today.

Grady pulled to a stop in the drive and rolled the windows of the truck down.
